The Architectural Book Committee of the Halifax County Historical Society is pleased to announce An Architectural History of Halifax County, Virginia, will be available this fall.
This book is written and published by the Halifax County Historical Society, is designed to spark a new appreciation of the historic landscape of the county and to inspire a renewal in stewardship of its irreplaceable architectural legacy.

233rd Commemoration of the Crossing of the Dan
The 233rd Commemoration of the Crossing of the Dan (River) in Halifax County during the American Revolution will be held in February 2014. Free public events are planned for Thursday night, February 20th and Saturday morning, February 22nd 2014, at The Prizery, local community arts center, located at 700 Bruce Street, South Boston, Virginia.

February 24, 2014 - Lecture: Murder in Lexington
The Historical Society is joining with the Sons of the Confederacy to sponsor author Dan Morrow as a speaker for Monday, February 24th. He will be speaking on his book Murder in Lexington. The meeting will be held at the Spare Times Grill Located in the World of Sports Complex, 2030 Bill Tuck Highway, South Boston, Va 24592. Dinner (from the menu) will be at 6 p.m. for those wanting to join us. Otherwise the program will begin at 7 p.m.
Crossing Receives "National Historic Event" Status
The Crossing of the Dan, a nearly forgotten episode of the American Revolution that occurred at South Boston, Virginia, has just received recognition by the National Society Sons of the American Revolution as a major historic event.

Annual Meeting October 14, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Halifax County Court House. Dr. Richard Guy Wilson, Commonwealth Professor's Chair in Architectural History at the University of Virginia, will speak on the work of the Dabney Cosby family.

231st Anniversary Crossing of the Dan Commemoration
February 16 & 18, 2012
Berryman Green Chapter of the Virginia DAR, Dan River Chapter of the Virginia Society, SAR, Halifax County Historical Society, and Halifax County Middle School are co-hosting the 231st Anniversary Commemoration of the Crossing of the Dan (River) in Virginia during the American Revolution and invite you to attend and participate. Free public events are planned for Thursday night, February 16th and Saturday morning, February 18th, 2012, at The Prizery, the community and arts center, located at 700 Bruce Street, South Boston, Virginia. The Crossing of the Dan permanent exhibit opened on July 26, 2008, at The Prizery. Visit weekdays 9 to 5 and on Saturday from 10 to 4.
An Architectural History of Halifax County - This Hardbook will contain approximately 500 pages of illustrations, photos, histories, and guidelines for preserving historic properties. This volume will go on sale during 2009. See Publications for more detail.
History of Halifax - This is a republication of the original two volume hardback by Pocahontas Wight Edmunds and is now available for sale.
The Race to the Dan - "the retreat that rescued the American Revolution", written by Larry Aaron - an educator, historian and a Pittsylvania County resident - on sale now. The author is contributing all proceeds to the the construction and maintenance of The Crossing of the Dan exhibit.
The Halifax County Historical Society is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization and all gifts are tax-deductable. The Society's mission is to preserve historical information for dissemination to the public, help individuals who wish to preserve historic structures, and present programs and exhibits of historic value to the public.
